Laboratory Unit

A clinical laboratory, commonly referred to as a medical laboratory, is a specialized facility designed to conduct various tests on clinical specimens, in order to obtain information about a patient's health status. These tests are primarily performed for the purpose of screening, diagnosing, treating, and preventing illnesses. Medical laboratory testing plays vital role in the field of medicine, by providing essential data that enables clinicians to deliver timely and effective preventive care to their patients. In fact, an estimated 70% of medical decisions pertaining to patient diagnosis, treatment, hospitalization, and discharge are made based on laboratory test results. At Himalaya Eye Hospital, we take pride in offering exceptional laboratory services, with a particular focus on the diagnosis of ocular diseases. Our laboratory encompasses various departments, including Biochemistry, Hematology, Serology, Immunology, Blood Banking, Parasitology, and Microbiology, all of which offer specialized services to our patients. Our Biochemistry department is fully equipped with a semi-automated analyzer that enables us to conduct accurate tests for the estimation of blood glucose level, uric acid, renal function, liver function, and lipid profile tests. In our Hematology department, we utilize a 5-part hematology analyzer that provides us with a patient's full blood cell count information. We also perform erythrocyte sedimentation rate tests to detect any ongoing infections or inflammation in the patient's body. Bleeding time and clotting time estimation are further carried out to aid in surgical evaluation. Our Serology department provides a range of services for the rapid detection of various viral infections such as Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV), and Hepatitis B virus (HBsAg), and also offers Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) tests for Syphilis and Anti-toxoplasma Abs detection for Toxoplasmosis. Additionally, the Immunology department performs testing for C-reactive protein, Rheumatoid factor, and Mantoux tests. Our Blood Banking department offers blood grouping and Rh typing services. The Parasitology department provides services for the urine and stool routine examination and parasite detection. Moreover, our Microbiology laboratory is equipped with a Biosafety Cabinet Class II for the isolation and identification of bacterial and fungal microbial organisms from culture of various ocular and non-ocular samples such as corneal scraping, corneal swab, conjunctival swab, pus swab, aqueous fluid, vitreous tap, urine, and blood. In addition to isolating and identifying the causative agents of infection, we also perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) to provide physicians with accurate drug sensitivity information for prompt and effective treatment strategies. At HEH laboratory, we are committed to offering our patients the utmost convenience and affordability in their diagnostic and testing needs. In the event that a particular test cannot be conducted in our laboratory, we provide the service of collecting and referring the specimen to a reference laboratory. We take great pride in maintaining our vision of providing high- quality laboratory services and conducting research of international excellence, which will ultimately contribute to the betterment of our patients and the nation as a whole. By consistently striving for excellence, we can ensure that our patients receive accurate diagnoses, effective treatments, and a higher standard of care.
