Ophthalmic Assistant Training Program

With an aim to contribute to national eye care program by developing middle level manpower for eye care service, HEH has been conducting ophthalmic assistant training since the inception. At present 74 ophthalmic assistants trained at the HEH are providing eye care service from various eye hospitals and PECC in the country. The ophthalmic assistants gradating from HEH are preferred for employment because of the quality of training including practical exposures.

The OA training program conducted so far was under full scholarship system. But in this year, OA Training under full fee paying scheme also began. A batch of 10 trainees was enrolled for the training this year. At present total 24 trainees (7, 7 and 10 from 7th, 8th, and 9th batch respectively) are undergoing the training at the HEH.

Staff Training

Community Ophthalmology and Service Marketing Training: Mr. Kali Bahadure Rawat, Incharge of PECC, Jumla took part in one month long course on ‘Community Ophthalmology and Service Marketing’ held in Aravind Eye Institute, Madurai India.

Observation Visit: Dr. Rajesh Pradhan, one of the ophthalmologists working at the HEH, made an observation visit to University Hospital Maastricht. The visit was for a period of one month.

Phaco Training: HEH conducted 10 days long Phaco Training for its Ophthalmologists. Dr. Sanjay Dhawan from Delhi, India was invited as trainer. All ophthalmologists working in the hospital actively participated in the training

Galucoma Fwllowhsip: Dr. Indra Man Maharjan went for three-month long Glaucoma Fellowship at LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad India. The course commenced on 1sth July 2006.

Participation in Workshop: Dr. Sunu Dulal, Medical Director and Mr. Shiva Ram Bhandari, Finance Officer took part in 21st Congress of Asia Paciffic Academy of Ophthalmology held in Singapore.

Scholarship – MD Ophthalmology

Under the Program, financial support has been provided to doctors pursuing post-graduation (MD) in Ophthalmology at B.P Koirala Lions Centre for Ophthalmic Study (BPKLCOS), Kathmandu. During the year three candidates (one each in first, second and third year) were undergoing the courses under such support.

Primary Eye Care Training

The hospital, being guided by the policy of integrating eye care service into primary health care and strengthening eye care service at the primary level, has been providing primary eye care training to different categories of health personnel in the target are. This year 92 (45 Village Health Workers and 47 Traditional Healers) received primary eye care training. Similarly, 5 persons were provided Pseudophakic training.

Elective Study

The hospital has also attracted medical students from abroad for the elective study on Ophthalmology. Students from the medical colleges in Australia, Netherlands, and United Kingdom are coming for such study.

During the period under review, altogether six students came tot he hospital: five from University of Utrecht, the Netherlands and one from University of London, UK. Each student spent three weeks for study.Low Vision Training

 The hospital has been providing Low Vision Training to various categories of personnel (both clinical and non clinical). This year, 119 personnel (32 clinical and 87 non clinical) were provided low vision training under the national Low Vision Program Implemented by the NNJS

MD Residents Training Program

 Eight residents from B.P Koirala Lions Centre for Ophthalmic Study (BPKLCONS) were posted at the HEH on a rotation basis as part of the MD course. The duration of posting of each resident was six weeks.

Orientation Program for Nursing Students

The hospital, like in previous years, conducted ophthalmology orientation program for the 3rd year nursing students form Institute of Medicine, Nursing Campus, Pokhara. During the year 45 nursing students received such orientation.
